5. check out: Từ lóng này có nghĩa là “ngó
ngiêng” theo kiểu “nam ngó nữ”, “nữ ngó

Asshole (a-hole)
An Asshole, or a-hole if you want to sound a bit more polite, is a mean person in general or someone who does something bad to you. As you are referring to someone as the hole in someone's ass, or butt, this is a pretty strong word.

A-list
The A-list is the list or group of the best of something. A-list movie stars are the most famous and highest paid actors.

Absotively (absotively-posilutely)
Absotively is a combination of absolutely and positively, and is slang for certainly!

Airhead
An airhead is someone who is considered really, really dumb. This word refers to the fact that it seems like the person's head is filled with nothing but air.

- That airhead can't even tell the difference between dog tracks (footprints) and train tracks.
Amped
To be amped means to be pumped up and excited. An Amplifier is a piece of sound equipment that makes sounds louder.

Average
The slang meaning of average is regular, normal or nothing special. English speakers use this word to describe things like restaurants, dates and movies.

- That TV show I was watching yesterday was just average. It was boring, but still interesting enough to keep me watching.
Ankle-biter
Ankle-biters are babies and small children. We call them ankle-biters because they crawl around on the floor and are just tall enough to bite you on the area just above your shoes.

Autopilot
When someone or something is on autopilot, it moves or operates automatically. This word comes from the control setting that allows planes to fly themselves.

- I've been on autopilot all day! I went to work, did my boring job and thought about nothing!
Badass
A badass is someone who is ultra-cool. This term, usually used for strong, confident men, describes someone who does what he wants when he wants.
- That guy is such a badass! He wrestles rhinos and drinks motor oil!
Bitch
Though bitch means female dog, the many slang meanings of this word can be applied to both men and women. We'll look at a few of them in turn now.
1. When you call a woman a bitch, you're saying that she is being loud, rude, unreasonable and/or overly aggressive. Like "asshole," this is a very strong word, so don't use it on someone's grandmother.
- I know you're upset, but you don't have to be such a bitch about it!
2. When a man is called a bitch, this usually means that he is being called weak or being made to feel bad because he is a subordinate, or a person of a lower rank. When a man is someone's bitch, this means that he is controlled by another person.
- I'm hungry! Be my bitch and make me some breakfast!
3. As a verb, to bitch means to complain or whine too much about something you think is unfair.
- Stop bitching about your situation and do something about it!
Ball (Bawl)
To ball means to cry a lot. We say that someone is balling their eyes out when they are sad and crying very loudly.
- The little girl's dog ran away and she balled her eyes out for weeks.
Bombshell
We call a beautiful, sexy woman a bombshell to describe her as powerful and explosively hot.
- I met this beautiful bombshell at a party and wanted to marry her instantly!
Beef
Beef refers to complaints or bad feelings. To have a problem with something is to have a beef with it.
- I've had a beef with that guy ever since he tried to steal my girlfriend.
Beer Goggles
Goggles are the tight glasses you wear when swimming. Though they keep water out of your eyes, goggles usually get foggy and decrease your ability to see. Like goggles, alcohol also decreases your ability to think and see clearly. So, after someone has had a few drinks, can't see clearly and becomes more likely to want to sleep with, or have sex with, someone they wouldn't normally be attracted to, they're said to be wearing their beer goggles.
- Someone may look ugly to you when you're sober, or not drinking, but they'll look fantastic with your beer goggles on!
Bollocks
Bollocks is British slang for testicles and is said when something is considered nonsense or an outright lie.
- You're 25 years old? Bollocks! You look more like 60!
Bug Out
To bug out means to get away, or escape, very quickly. In an emergency, you bug out and get as far away as possible.
- We had to bug out and run home when the lightning storm ruined our picnic.
Bite
Like taking a physical bite out of someone, to bite someone's words or style is to steal their idea or copy them. This slang is usually used by song writers and rappers when referring to someone using their lyrics. Someone who bites is a biter.
- Don't bite my lyrics! Write your own!
Cool
Cool is a tricky English word and means different things to different people. Cool can mean relaxed under pressure, confident, smart, and serves as a general term for someone who does their own thing without caring about what others think.
- My cousin is so cool! He plays the guitar and flies his own airplane.
Catchy
We use the word catchy to refer to music that stays in your head. Music with a memorable or captivating beat or melody grabs or catches you. Any bit of music, even short pieces used in commercials can be catchy.
- Every summer you'll hear catchy songs on the radio over and over again.
Clueless
To be clueless is to not understand, or have no idea what's happening, either generally or in a specific situation. Because clues are bits of information, if I give you a clue about something, I am sharing a piece of information about it. Police usually look for clues to help solve crimes.
The suffix "less" means none at all. If I am homeless, I have no home.

Cakewalk
A cakewalk is something that is incredibly easy. This word comes from the party game of the same name where absolutely no skill is required to win one or more cakes.
- My part-time job is a cakewalk. All I have to do is push a button once an hour.
Clique
A clique is a group of very close friends who usually don't socialize with non-members. Cliques usually form when large organizations like schools and companies have enough people to support smaller groupings of like-minded people. Some high school cliques you'll see in movies and TV shows include the jocks, or athletes, the pretty girls the jocks date, and the nerds, or good students who work study hard but wish they were jocks or pretty girls.
- There are too many cliques to count at my school.
Cockblock
To cockblock a guy is to stop him, either on purpose or unintentionally, from either hitting on or sleeping with a woman he is interested in. To block something is to get in its way. In this case, the thing being blocked is the equipment in a man's pants. A man may cockblock another man if he is interested in the same woman and a woman can cockblock a man if she doesn't want him talking with her friend.
- I was talking with that hot girl, but her friend cockblocked me before I could get her number.
Choice
In English slang, choice becomes an adjective that means high quality or excellent. A choice restaurant or a choice wine is considered well-chosen. Choice is only used when making an actual choice between alternatives. You can select a choice car, but you can't have a choice mom, no matter how cool she is, because you couldn't choose her.
- This is a choice club! How did you get on the guest list?
Commando
To go commando is to not wear underwear. This expression is said to have come from soldiers who remove their sweaty underwear after long marches to improve ventilation.
- It's a beautiful spring day and I just felt like going commando!
Chicken
A chicken is someone who is scared. This word is used to challenge, taunt or tease people when they do not want to do something they are uncomfortable with. For added emphasis, the person calling someone a chicken may imitate the sound of a chicken after a challenge.
- Are you going to ask that girl for her number, or are you chicken? (B... b... b-gawk!)
Chill (Chill Out)
As the literal meaning of the word chill is to make something cold, the slang meaning of the word is to relax and slow down. To chill is the opposite of doing something fast and exciting. You chill, or relax, at home and watch a movie on a Friday night.
- It was really nice just to relax and chill on the beach over my vacation.
Crap
Crap is the less strong version of shit and means something bad or undesirable like old junk we no longer want. We can also use it when we're upset or frustrated in polite company. Crap! I forgot to feed my cat today!
- Look at all this crap! Why did we buy all of useless junk?
Deadbeat
A deadbeat is a lazy person who usually relies on others for the things they need. A friend may spend the night on your couch, but if they live there, they're probably a deadbeat. A deadbeat is also someone who fails to do what they should be doing.
- That deadbeat father never sent any money to help support his children after his divorce.
Diss
Diss is short for disrespect. When you say something bad about someone, or insult them, you are dissing them. Diss can also be a noun.
- I got teased and dissed a lot while playing basketball yesterday because I'm a really awful player.
Damage
When something is hurt or broken, it is damaged. As slang, we use the term damage to describe the cost of something we don't really want to pay for. If a car repair costs $100, your wallet takes the "damage" of $100. You suffer "damage" when you have to pay for your child's braces, but not when you take a date out for dinner. When asking a friend how much something cost, you can ask, "What was the damage?"
- I just found out that my kid needs special shoes. The damage could be a few hundred dollars.
Deck
To deck someone is to punch them so hard that they are knocked to the floor. You can also be hit really hard by something, get knocked down, and still be considered "decked."
- The kangaroo got decked and hit the ground hard.
Down-low
To keep something on the down-low is to keep it secret. People can keep things on the down-low and companies can also keep new ideas on the down-low.
- I'm working on a new product for my company, but I'm keeping it on the down-low until everything is ready.
Dirt
Dirt is embarrassing or private information about someone which could hurt their reputation if revealed. Political candidates often "dig up dirt" on their opponents to injure their reputation before elections. To know a dark secret about someone is to have dirt on them.
- Those guys have dirt on me, so we'd better be nice to them.
Drag
A drag is something tiring, depressing or sad. Being trapped inside doing your taxes on a sunny day can be a real drag.
- It was a real drag missing the party last night because I had to work late.
Dud
A dud refers to a machine, or something like an explosive, that works improperly or not at all. A toaster that only burns toast is a dud. A person who doesn't live up to certain expectations can also be considered a dud.
- She heard all of these great things about that guy before their date, but he turned out to be a real dud.
Dull
Just like a dull, or unsharpened, knife, anything boring or uninteresting can be considered dull. Hopefully you don't find this English lesson dull!
- The lecture on island rocks I went to yesterday was really dull.
Dump
A dump is an uninviting or dirty place. To dump something means to pour or drop it without care. Garbage is often taken to garbage dumps. A dumpster is a big trash container, and a dumpster diver is someone who goes looking through trash to find valuable things people may have thrown away.
- Before my girlfriend comes over, I'd better clean up my dump of an apartment.
Doodle
A doodle is a quick drawing, usually made when you're not paying attention to what you're working on. Students will sometimes doodle in dull classes if teachers don't keep them entertained.
- I often doodle while I'm on the phone and have drawn some really cool designs.
Egghead
Egghead is slang for smart person. Anyone who knows a lot and studies a lot can be considered to be an egghead.
- I was a real egghead in college. I always stayed in the library and never went on any dates.
Eye Candy
Eye candy refers to something that is visually attractive and grabs lots of attention. Flashy lights and women in sexy dresses are called eye candy because, like real candy, you enjoy looking at them for the moment but probably shouldn't enjoy them for very long. Eye candy is often sexually arousing and is designed to have addictive appeal.
- The 80-year-old billionaire had a nice piece of 24-year-old eye candy on his arm at the party.
Earful/Eyeful
To get an earful or an eyeful of something means to hear a lot or see a lot of it for a long time. If your mom yells at you for crashing her car, you get an earful of her screaming. If your grandmother's swimsuit falls off on the beach while you're talking with her, you get an eyeful.
- I got an earful from my boss at work when I lost a big client.
Elbow Grease
Elbow grease is manual labor, or work you must physically do. When English speakers say that something just needs a bit of elbow grease, this means that some hard work is required to make it run smoothly.
- This old car looks bad, but with a little elbow grease, it'll be running like new!
Expat
Expat is short for expatriate, and refers to someone who is living in a foreign country. If you're studying English in America and you're from Brazil, then you're an expat!
- I'm an American expat living in Nepal!
Ex
Ex means previous or old. The woman I used to date is my ex-girlfriend, and someone who used to play baseball can be called an ex-baseball player. The term ex by itself usually refers to an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend.
- I had to go over to my ex's house yesterday to pick up my old clothes.
Easy Street
Easy street means being in luck or having things come really easy for you. If you live in paradise and never have to work, you're living on easy street.
- I was living on easy street after winning the lottery!
Eating
When English speakers say that something is eating them, this means that something is bothering or angering them. If someone looks angry or grumpy, we often ask, "What's eating you?"
- What's eating me?! I bought these cheap balloons that pop when I blow them up!
Empty Nester
When all of the children in a family finally leave a family home to start their own lives, we say that children have left the nest. Parents who remain in the home after their children have all moved out of the home are considered empty nesters. Remember that if you see the suffix --er on the end of a word, that usually means it's a person or a machine. A teacher is someone who teaches.
- After my younger sister went away to college, my parents became empty nesters.
Exec
Exec is short for executive. This informal title is often used by workers in a company when talking about people higher up in an organization, but anyone can use it to describe executives in any organization.
- I'm going golfing with a few execs from our partner company.
Eyeball
To eyeball something means to stare at it or examine it very closely. Usually, we eyeball people that make us mad or upset. You don't eyeball someone you love unless they eat the last piece of chocolate cake.
- Don't eyeball people unless you're looking for a fight!
Fuck
This is one of the most powerful words in English, so please use it carefully! Fuck has many, many uses, but we'll only cover a few of them here. Usually, fuck means to have sex (and not sweet, tender, romantic sex), or something negative. To have a serious problem is to be fucked. An unpleasant or disorganized situation is fucked up. To fail frequently is to be a fuck-up. To be deceived is to be fucked over. To play around and not do what you should be is to fuck around. To not care is to not give a fuck. In more polite company, you can say that something is FUBAR, or fucked up beyond all recognition. When people bother you too much, you can tell them to fuck off. Fuck also serves as a great filler word for positive and negative situations. "Hey, Bill! It's been too long! How the fuck are you?" "You just got fucking dirt on my new fucking couch, fucker."

Fossil
Real fossils are the remains of animals and plants that lived long ago. These are things like dinosaur and fish bones preserved in rock. As slang, fossil means someone or something that is incredibly old.
- Don't call your grandmother a fossil if you want some of her delicious pie!
Fancy
To fancy someone is to like them. You can also fancy doing something like going skiing or getting something like a new pair of shoes.
- Do you fancy going out for dessert?
Flip-flop
To flip-flop means to change your mind or take an opposite position suddenly. People who flip-flop frequently are very annoying to others. Political candidates often flip-flop on an issue depending on who their audience is. Flip-flops are also pairs of cheap sandals.
- Do you like living with my dog or not? Stop flip-flopping and tell me the truth!
Flake
A flake is someone who cannot be trusted with responsibility because they either forget or can't follow through. To call someone a flake, or say they are flakey, is to say they are unreliable. To miss an appointment or fail to do what you say you will is to flake-out.
- My friend is such a flake. Every time she says she'll meet me, she never does.
Flick
A flick is another word for movie. English speakers will often talk about going to a flick, or catching a flick.
- Come over to my place and we can watch a flick together.
Fluke
A fluke is something positive that happens more by accident than skill. Winning a soccer game because the goalie accidentally fell down is a fluke.
- Meeting my wife was a total fluke! I missed my train and met her at the station.
Flame
A flame is a tirade, or an overly aggressive and abusive verbal or written attack on someone. People are usually flamed online because the anonymity of the internet makes saying incredibly rude things really easy. Someone who flames is a flamer.

Freebie
A freebie is something, like an additional bonus, that you get for free. You'll often see freebies in stores as promotions. Sign up for a credit card and get a t-shirt as a freebie!
- My new car was a freebie, but I had to buy a house to get it!
Fruitcake
A fruitcake is an eccentric or crazy person who does their own thing. A real fruitcake is a kind of dessert usually sent to friends and family around the winter holidays. Unfortunately, because people don't really like fruit cakes, they're often sent as jokes.
- My sister is such a fruitcake. She takes her baby to the beach in his crib.
Five-0 (5-0)
Five 0 is slang for police officers. This slang originates from the 1970's American TV police drama Hawaii 5-0. Hawaii is the 50th American state.
- Fuck, it's the 5-0! Drop that TV and run!
Gobbledygook
Gobbledygook is spoken or written words or sounds with no meaning. When computer code becomes Gobbledygook, it's impossible to read and understand. Babies often speak gobbledygook as they learn to speak a language.
- When I restarted my computer, my whole essay turned into gobbledygook!
Green
Someone is considered green when they lack experience or begin doing something for the first time. New students, employees and teammates are all green.
- Because you're green, you won't have much responsibility at this company.
Gab
To gab means to talk or chatter about unimportant or ordinary things. Casual conversation is usually a form of gabbing. When you have important information to share, you talk, but you gab about a TV show when you're waiting for the bus.
- My sisters love to gab on the phone all day.
Geezer
I'm American, but Alec would say the word more like this: geezer. Geezer is British slang for man. Any man can be a geezer, but this slang is used particularly for old men.
- Someone should buy that geezer a new hat!
Goof off
A goof is a small mistake. Jumble your words when you speak and you make a goof. To goof off means to be silly or not do what you should be doing. If you have work to do but you decide to play some games instead, you're goofing off or goofing around.
- I should be packing for my trip, but it's more fun to goof off at the fair!
Ginormous
Just like the word "absotively," which is a combination of the words absolutely and positively, "ginormous" is a combination of the words gigantic and enormous, and means really, really big! An elephant is big, but a brachiosaur, one of the largest dinosaurs, is ginormous!
- Earth is big, but The Sun is ginormous!
Gnarly
Gnarly has many different uses, much like the word "cool." Gnarly, in the positive sense, means great, awesome or fantastic. To a surfer, a powerful, ginormous wave is gnarly. Negatively, gnarly can be used to mean weird or suspicious. "This green and brown soup looks a bit gnarly to me."
- I did a gnarly, 360 degree jump on my skateboard!
Good Call
A good call is a good idea or decision. "Good call" is also used frequently when judging sporting events. If a referee, judge or umpire makes a good decision regarding a play, he's considered to have made a good call. A "bad call" is the opposite of a good call and a "close call," or a "tough call," is a call that's difficult to make. "I don't know if I like this pasta. It's a tough call."
- Good call on this restaurant! This place is cheap AND delicious!
Gravy
Gravy is anything that's really easy. A job where you sit around watching YouTube videos of cats all day is gravy.
- My life is gravy because I can sleep all day and eat the tourists!
Greasy Spoon
A greasy spoon is a cheap and/or low quality restaurant like a diner or a cafe. This term is older American English, but it's still used in smaller towns and for local diners in cities.
- Food from a greasy spoon usually isn't good for you, but it sure can be tasty!
Grub
Grub is a very casual way of saying food. You can pick up some grub or eat some grub. Just remember that grub is an UNcountable noun! If you eat some grub, you're eating some casual food, but if you eat A grub you're eating a baby insect!
- Let's grab some grub at that local greasy spoon you like!
Hack
The usual meaning of hack is to cut or chop at something without care. You can also hack something when you can deal with it. Someone who can't hack it in the Army usually drops out. With the dawn of computers, the term is most widely used now to talk about circumventing, modifying or breaking something like a computer or other machine for your own purposes. I hacked my toaster and turned it into a time machine!
- Some computer hackers have the ability to break into networks and steal personal information.
Hottie
A hottie is usually an attractive young woman or man. You can describe someone as hot if you find them physically attractive.
- I hope I can get the phone number from that hottie over there.
Hater
A hater is someone who is usually jealous of the success of others. To say spiteful or mean things to someone, or about someone, who is successful is to hate, or hate on, someone. Don't be a hater!
- Some people started hating on my friend when she got a record deal.
Happy Camper
A happy camper is someone who's in a good mood. Someone relaxing around a warm fire at a campground is usually a happy camper.
- My son was NOT a happy camper when I missed his birthday party.
Hardcore
Hardcore means extremely difficult. Something requiring extreme physical effort is usually hardcore, but anything very difficult, like a school entrance exam, can be considered hardcore. Someone who is hardcore is considered to be very tough and strong.
- My uncle is hardcore. He eats whole lionfish raw!
High Roller
A high roller is someone who is very wealthy and can spend money without care. We often say that high rollers have money to burn.
- When a high roller walks into a casino, everyone comes over to watch him play.
Hard Case
A hard case is a bitter or tough person. A hard case has usually had a difficult life and may have even spent time in prison.
- That guy's a real hard case. He's been picked on his whole life and now he wants revenge.
Head
The head is another word for the toilet or bathroom. You will often hear hard cases and people from outside big cities in movies asking for the head when they need a toilet.
- Where's the paper? I'm going to the head.
Home Run
A home run is a baseball term that means to hit the baseball beyond the playing field. It is the best hit you can have in baseball. Used in any context, a home run becomes another way of describing a great achievement. If you hit a home run, you succeed!
- I hit a home run for my company when I signed a contract with a new client!
Hell of a... Helluva
"Hell of a" means great, very or extreme, and can be used in both good and bad situations. "We had a hell of a time climbing that mountain" means that we had a very difficult time climbing the mountain.
- Tell your friends! They're having a hell of a sale at our favorite store!
Heat
Heat refers to security or police and is usually used by criminals or people doing something bad in movies and TV shows. Heat can also mean firearm. To "pack heat" means to carry a gun.
- Hide the heat! The police are right over there!
Ice
Ice is the slang word for fancy jewelry like diamonds. You'll most often hear this word used in rap music. With a very different meaning, to "ice" someone means to kill them.
- My lady has expensive taste and loves to be covered in ice from head to toe.
Idiot Box
Idiot box is another word for television, because many people think TV makes people mindless, stupid and unproductive.
- Stare at the idiot box for too long and your mind will turn to mush!
ID
ID is short for identification. An ID can be anything from a driver's license to a passport or a library card.
- You'll have to show your member's card and ID if you want to rent a car here.
Itch
Itch in the usual sense means irritated, uncomfortable skin, usually in the form of a bite from an insect, that you can't stop touching. Similarly, the slang definition of itch means an intense desire to do something. If you have an itch to play soccer, you really want to play soccer. To act on your desire, or relieve your itch, is to scratch your itch.
- I'd better scratch my itch to open my own seaside restaurant soon, before I go crazy!
Item
An item is a couple in a relationship. When two people fall in love or start dating, they become an item. People that follow celebrity relationships often talk about two celebrities becoming "quite the item."
- My friend and his girlfriend fell in love last year and have been a serious item ever since.
Inhale
To inhale something is to eat it incredibly fast as if you were inhaling air. People that inhale their food often look like vacuum cleaners sucking food off of plates.
- Don't inhale your food! Eat slowly and chew properly.
In
What's popular, trendy and fashionable during a particular time period is considered "in style" or just "in." Trendy music, food, fashion, events and anything else in popular culture can be called "in." Popular people can also be considered "in," and the popular group of people at a school or organization is known as the "in crowd."
- I'll never be cool enough to keep up with what's "in" today.
In The bag
Something that's in the bag is easily or assuredly achievable. To remember this phrase, think of something that's in the bag as if it's something you're already holding. If you know that you will win a game, then victory's in the bag.
- We're winning by 30 points with only one minute to go! Victory's in the bag!
In The Know
Someone who's in the know is someone who has information that others don't. If you receive information before others, or know secret, confidential information, you're considered to be in the know.
- My friend gets all the great deals when buying rental properties because he's in the know.
In-Your-Face
Something that's in-your-face is something loud, aggressive, obnoxious and/or confrontational. People can be in-your-face if they are literally standing close to you and being aggressive. Advertising can also be in-your-face if it's loud, distracting and annoying.
- I wanted to sit and read a book but this other guy at the library was all in my face and annoying me with questions.
Iffy
Something that's iffy is doubtful, suspect or questionable. Anything you're unsure of can be iffy. If the water you're about to drink looks green, even though you're told it's OK to drink, you'd be right to call the water "iffy."
- I'd like to go out and have a picnic today, but the weather looks a little iffy.
Jabber
To jabber is to talk for a long while, saying things that listeners don't really want to hear. If you're talking for a long time about your Pokémon collection and everyone else is reading something, there's a good chance you're jabbering.
- Stop jabbering already and get to the point!
Jip
To jip someone is to cheat them out of their fair share or intentionally take money that belongs to them. If everyone else gets two cupcakes and you only get one, you get jipped. Didn't get the correct change at the grocery store? If the cashier had a sneaky smile, you probably got jipped.
- That newspaper vending machine jipped me! I put in my money and it wouldn't give me a paper or my money back!
Jack
To jack something is to steal it. Cars, jewelry, shoes and anything else that can be taken quickly can be jacked. Large-scale theft that requires time and planning is usually a heist.
- Did you see who came in here? Someone just jacked all my new phones.
Jackass
Jackass is a general insult English speakers use to talk about anyone that is being loud, rude, dumb, unpleasant, argumentative, disrespectful and/or obnoxious. The TV show and movies of the same name are about people performing stunts, getting injured and doing other things only a jackass would be caught doing.
- Don't be a jackass! Stop turning on the TV and let me read in peace!
Jack Of All Trades
A jack of all trades is someone who is good at many things but not a specialist in one particular thing. Depending on how this phrase is used, it can have both good and bad meanings. You can call someone a jack of all trades in praise of their well-rounded set of talents, or use it to belittle them when special mastery is required.
- I'd rather be a jack of all trades than a master of one.
Jock
A jock is a sports athlete who usually plays multiple, and often rough, sports like football and hockey. Jock also has the slightly negative meaning of someone who is not very intelligent and only capable of playing sports and doing physical activities. Women who play lots of sports can also be called jocks or tomboys.
- My dad was a jock in college. He played football and baseball, and ran track.
Just Off The Boat
Someone who's just off the boat is someone who is new and inexperienced. This expression comes from the idea of a traveler stepping off a boat for the first time in a brand new country. Such a person looks around confused and awed by strange new things. Anyone new to a group or organization like a school can be just off the boat. "Fresh off the boat" is also commonly used.
- Look at that guy over there with the smile and the backpack. He must be just off the boat.
Jam
A jam is another word for trouble. The difference between trouble and jam is that a jam is usually not very serious and doesn't put you in physical danger. A car crash is trouble, but forgetting your lunch is more of a jam. Jams are usually fixed with a phone call or some easy help from someone else.
- I seem to be in a bit of a jam here. I left my airplane ticket at home, so could you print me a new one?
Junkie
A junkie is someone who is hooked on, or addicted to, something. People addicted to drugs are junkies, but so are people addicted to FarmVille. People who love to skydive and do other extreme sports often call themselves "adrenaline junkies" because they are addicted to the rush they feel when their bodies are excited.
- My uncle was a video game junkie but finally gave it up when his wife threatened to leave him.
Jerk Someone Around
To jerk someone around is to tease or play with them. If you call customer service and they keep transferring you to different people, then you're being jerked around. If a woman isn't really interested in dating a guy but keeps him around anyway, she's jerking him around.
- I didn't buy the boat because the dealer kept changing the price and jerking me around.
Joint
A joint is a casual place, like a fast food restaurant, where people can come and go easily. A local hamburger restaurant can be called a burger joint.
- Let's go to that chicken joint you like. They have really good hot sauce!
Kickass/Kick Ass
English speakers love ass! This word is used in so many ways and is combined with other words to make some great phrases. You've already learned badass and jackass in this series. We also taught you asshole, but forgot to teach you dumbass, which means stupid. Anyway, kickass means really fun, cool and/or exciting. It's an adjective used to describe things like parties. Kick ass, is a verb, and means to do really well at something. Both kickass and kick ass have positive meanings, but the thing to listen for is how the pronunciations of the slang word and phrasal verb are slightly different. This is a kickass party! This party kicks ass! Did you hear how the adjective was faster and how the verb had a rising intonation? Kickass. Kick ass!
- We really kicked ass with our kickass plays at the football game!
Knock
To knock something means to criticize, or make fun of, it. "Don't knock it till you try it," is a phrase English speakers often use to tell people not to say bad things about something before doing it themselves.
- Don't knock the kilt! The ladies love it.
Knockoff/ Knock Off
Listen carefully to the speed and intonation of my voice. A knockoff is a cheap fake or copy of something. You can buy a knockoff Rolex for only $10! Knock off is a phrasal verb with many uses. It can mean to stop working for the day, steal something, kill someone, stop doing something or reduce the price of something.
- The store knocked off the price of these knockoff jeans, so I got them for only $1!
Knock Back
We use knock back to describe drinking alcohol quickly. You can knock back a few beers, but you wouldn't say that you knocked back a glass of milk.
- I went to my favorite bar after work and knocked back a few shots.
Knockout/Knock Out
A knockout is a really beautiful woman. The phrasal verb knock out, sometimes expressed as K.O., can mean to hit someone so hard that go unconscious, or to finish doing something very quickly.
- I need to knock out my work so I'll be on time for my date at the park with this knockout I met.
Knock Up
To knock a woman up is to get her pregnant without intending to. Many couples end up getting married when the woman gets knocked up.
- Have fun on the camping trip, Bill! Just don't knock anyone up!
Kickback/Kick Back
A kickback is a payment, often made by secret, illegal agreement, where someone gets a percentage of money back in return for organizing a transaction. As an example, a government official can get a kickback from a company by recommending that company get a government contract. The company gets the job and the government official that organized the deal gets a piece of the money secretly from the company. The phrasal verb kick back just means to relax and forget about your worries and responsibilities.
- Because of all the great kickbacks I receive, I can kick back and relax on the beach all day.
Killer
Something killer is amazing, outstanding or game-changing. A killer dress is a very sexy dress and a killer smartphone app is really helpful or very fun and addictive. A Facebook killer, with "killer" being used as a verb, means the next big software or service that will unseat Facebook as the NEW popular social networking website.
- We need a killer stunt to really WOW people at our next animal show!
Kicks
Kicks are shoes. This slang is often used to describe sneakers and other shoes used for running and sports. We don't use this for dress shoes and we don't use the word "kick" to describe one shoe. You won't really hear this slang used in the regular conversations of people over the age of 25, but you'll hear it regularly from young people and movies.
- I just picked up a shiny new pair of kicks and I'm ready to hit the basketball court!
Klutz
A klutz is a clumsy person who is physically uncoordinated and often makes physical mistakes like dropping dishes.
- I'm such a klutz! I opened a drink for a girl and got it all over her shirt!
Knucklehead
A knucklehead is a stubborn person. Knuckleheads don't change their minds easily, learn lessons slowly and can be unresponsive even when yelled at.
- Tell that knucklehead kid of yours to stop cutting branches off my trees!
Kook
A kook is an odd, crazy or eccentric person. You can also describe someone who does weird, things like washing their car with their tongue, as kooky.
- That lady is a bit of a kook. She has tea parties with her 30 cats every Sunday.
Laid-Back
A laid-back person is physically relaxed or mentally calm. Just imagine a person laying back in a chair and taking a nap. Laid-back people don't get too excited about things and are generally happy anywhere.
- My dad's really laid-back. He lets me stay up late and play video games on school nights.
Lame
When something's lame, it's boring or uncool. If you're a teenager, going to a party with your mom and dad would probably be pretty lame.
- This movie's lame. Put something else on.
Legit
Legit is the shortened form of legitimate. Something legit is official, legal and generally OK. This slang is often used to talk about anything that could be fake, like an ID used by a minor when trying to get into a bar, or a purse sold off the back of a truck.
- Are you sure this watch is legit? It says Calvin Klean.
Loco
Loco is a borrowed word from Spanish, and it can mean crazy in both positive and dangerous ways as English slang. You can call someone loco or call a situation loco.
- Don't mess with that dog over there. It's loco and will try to bite you.
Lingo
Lingo is just short for language and we often use it casually when talking about anything from particular dialects to computer code.
- Can you stop with all the scientific lingo and just use plain English?
Lip
To give someone lip means to talk back to them. Children often give their parents lip, but anyone can give lip to an authority figure when they say something they shouldn't.
- I don't care what mom said! Do your homework and don't give me any lip.
Loaded
To "load" something basically means to fill it up, the way you load a truck with boxes. There are two main slang meanings of loaded, though. The first means to have a lot of money. A millionaire would be loaded. You can also say that someone's loaded when they've had too much to drink.
- That millionaire over there is really drunk! He's doubly loaded!
Looker
A looker is an attractive man or woman. It's someone you really want to look at. This slang is often used to describe clean and polished sports cars.
- That car's a real looker! I bet she drives like a dream.
Loudmouth
A loudmouth is a person who speaks with a loud voice generally and is often obnoxious. These people usually think they know everything and are happy to tell the world about it.
- Why don't you shut up already? You're such a loudmouth!
Ladies' Man
A ladies man is good with the ladies. He's loved by women and usually enjoys spending time around women. Used in a joking way, you could call a man that's not good with women and can never get a date a ladies' man in a sarcastic way.
- My friend's a real ladies' man and he's always got a date.
Make Out
To make out means to kiss someone passionately. And it usually involves touching of other kinds which I won't cover in this lesson. To see examples, just visit any high school.
- I was making out with my girlfriend in the theater and we missed half the movie!
Make Waves
To make waves is to cause trouble or do something that's not normally done. It comes from the idea of waves in water. When a boat passes by, it makes waves and disturbs the peace of the water. It's not necessarily bad to make waves, but people who don't like change will usually complain about others making waves.
- The new CEO is really making some waves in the company. A lot of senior people got fired.
Mash-Up
A mash-up is a combination of two or more things, like songs, that become something new and interesting. The Grey Album from DJ Danger Mouse is a mash-up of Jay-Z's Black Album and the White Album from the Beatles.
- I like mash-ups, but this mix of country music and death metal is AWFUL!
Max Out
"Max" is short for "maximum." If you reach the maximum limit of something, you've maxed it out. This can happen to credit cards, time, energy and machines.
- I maxed out my credit cards, so I think the responsible thing to do is get new ones!
Meds
Many slang words are abbreviations of words in common usage. "Meds" is the shortened form of "medication" or "medicine." "Meds" most often refers to medication that you take regularly for things like high blood pressure and depression. To be "off your meds" means that you're acting weird because you're not taking your medication.
- My cousin was put back on his meds because he tried to eat a live chicken.
Meathead
"Meathead" is often used to describe athletes who only think when it comes to sports. In other words, a meathead has big muscles but small brain capacity.
- That meathead can't count to ten, but he sure can carry a football.
Meat Market
"Meat market" is slang for a bar or club where men and women go to find others to hook up with physically. Think of it as the opposite of a church picnic.
- I need to forget about my ex-girlfriend. Let's hit up that meat market!
Meltdown
A meltdown is a massive problem or disaster. Just like an actual nuclear meltdown, a meltdown causes great stress for people. Meltdowns usually feature intense anger and yelling, especially if someone did something stupid.
- I came home five hours late and my mom had a meltdown.
Mess Up
To mess something up means to make a mistake or cause a problem that's not too serious. If you forget to do something like mail a letter when you were supposed to, you messed up.
- I messed up on a few exam questions, but at least I spelled my name right!
Mojo
Your mojo is your special sauce. It's your spirit, lively personality and passion. Charismatic people have lots of mojo.
- In order to win this new client, we're gonna need some of your magic mojo!
Moolah
There are TONS of slang words for money in English. Moolah is one with a particularly cool sense to it. You pay for things at a store with a credit card or CASH, but "moolah" would be a word used to describe money won at a casino or stolen from a bank.
- Look at all of this MOOLAH! I'm gonna buy a new car!
Newbie/Noob/Newb
A newbie is someone new to something. A newbie lacks experience and often makes many mistakes. This slang is most often used to describe people who are new to games and aren't very good at them.
- You're such a noob. Don't you know the difference between a v6 engine and a v8?
New York Minute
A New York minute is an incredibly fast period of time, like a split second. New York City is a very busy and fast-paced place, so people are often in a rush, or want to do things quickly.
- I ate my lunch in a New York minute because I had to start working again right away.
Narc
While the word "Narc" is the shortened form of "narcotics officer," a member of a special police division that enforces drug laws, anyone who tells authority figures (like police officers, bosses and parents) that another person did something wrong or illegal can be called a narc. This word is also a verb. You "narc out" someone if you report them to the police or other authority figures.
- If you narc out your friends, no one will trust you.
Nuke
This word is short for "nuclear bomb" or "nuclear weapon." It's also a verb, as you can nuke something to cause a great explosion, or destroy something completely. You can also use this word as a verb to describe cooking with a microwave oven. Nuke your frozen dinner for five minutes and you've got a meal!
- Nothing was left alive after the nuke hit.
Nail
To nail something means to do it perfectly. An athlete accomplishing a perfect move or action, like a gymnast landing perfectly, is said to "nail" the action. "Nail" is also another word for having sex. "I just nailed the hottest girl yesterday!"
- The swimmer nailed the dive and got a perfect 10/10.
Needle
To "needle" someone is to annoy or embarrass them repeatedly with jokes or insults, like poking them repeatedly with a needle. If your friend is wearing some funny clothes and you keep making fun of them, you're needling them.
- My friends thought the clothes and hat I was wearing were funny, so they needled me for an hour.
Nerd
"Nerd" is the term for an intelligent yet socially awkward person. Nerds often spend their time researching or studying things considered boring or highly technical, like varieties of beetles, and can become obsessive about their passions. Though the idea most people have of a nerd is an unattractive person studying in a library for 28 hours a day, anyone who is obsessive about something can be called a nerd. Some people are sports nerds and know all of the statistics for their favorite teams.
- My last girlfriend was a shy nerd who collected rocks, but I thought she was really cute.
Ninja
Referencing the shadowy, skilled assassins of traditional Japan, a ninja of today is anyone who is a highly skilled expert. Someone who knows how to fix any computer in a very short amount of time could be called a "tech support ninja."
- My friend in college was called the "cookie ninja" because he always took cookies from the cafeteria without being seen.
Nosey
To be "nosey" means to put your nose into other people's business. When you're nosey, you ask lots of questions about what others are doing, and you want to know what's going on, even if it has nothing to do with you.
- Mind your own business and stop being so nosey.
Numero Uno
This Spanish term, commonly found in English conversations, means "number one." It refers to the best or top person in a group or organization, like the boss or president.
- I was numero uno in sales of copy machines at my company last month.
Nutjob/Nutcase
A nutjob, or nutcase, is a crazy or eccentric person who does things that look foolish or ridiculous to others.
- If you jump out of your window because you think you can fly, you're a nutjob! Only a nutjob would try to kiss a crocodile.

Các cách nói trẹo hay nói tránh đi là một hiện tượng văn hóa trong mọi ngôn ngữ. Cụm từ lóng sau đây sẽ nói thay cho từ ngữ cấm kị là "chết" của con người. Người Việt hay Tây Phương họ cũng dùng các cách nói trẹo đi như:
- Her eyes fluttered open for a moment and then she breathed her last.
(Đôi mắt của bà dập đờn mở ra trong vài giây và sau đó bà trút hơi thở cuối cùng)
- She breathed her last at about two o'clock that afternoon.
(Bà mất / ra đi / qua đời / thở hơi thở cuối cùng ... vào khoảng 2 giờ chiều hôm đó.)
- Cradled in his wife's arms, he breathed his last.
(Nằm gọn trong vòng tay của vợ mình, ông trút hơi thở cuối cùng của ông.)
(Ngụ ý chết vì tai nạn, chết banh xác, chết mất xác, chết đi, qua đời, tạ thế ... hoặc muốn chết thì hãy mua nông trại hay đất để chôn xác như câu chuyện sau đây.)
Câu chuyện xảy ra trong một cuốn truyện tên "Of Mice and Men", có hai nhân vật tên là George and Lennie, họ là hai người làm thuê cho các nơi khác, họ luôn luôn nói về chuyện mua một nông trại để về đó ở mà không phải trả lời ai một câu hỏi nào cả. Sau đó, họ hỏi nhau làm sao sẽ mua đất. George phải bắn Lennie chết một cách không đau đớn - Đây là cách làm sao để chết đi có nghĩa là mua đất (thứ mà không ai muốn mua) để chôn mình và từ đó có cụm từ "buy the farm"
Cụm từ lóng này phát xuất từ trong quân đội Mỹ.

Đây là tiếng lóng rất phổ biến - Thông thường chỉ cần nghe ai đó nói DAMN là bạn đã đủ hiểu họ nói gì ngay - Nó có nghĩa rất rộng và có thể kèm theo bất kỳ một câu nói nào.

5. Tiếng chửi thề với ngữ điệu tục tiểu thay cho giơ ngón tay giữa đồng nghĩa với "xuống địa ngục đi" - Ngữ điệu của dân hè phố ở Việt Nam hay dùng tiếng ĐM cũng đồng nghĩa tiếng DAMN này.

An Asshole, or a-hole if you want to sound a bit more polite, is a mean person in general or someone who does something bad to you. As you are referring to someone as the hole in someone's ass, or butt, this is a pretty strong word.

Bitch
Though bitch means female dog, the many slang meanings of this word can be applied to both men and women. We'll look at a few of them in turn now.
1. When you call a woman a bitch, you're saying that she is being loud, rude, unreasonable and/or overly aggressive. Like "asshole," this is a very strong word, so don't use it on someone's grandmother.
- I know you're upset, but you don't have to be such a bitch about it!
2. When a man is called a bitch, this usually means that he is being called weak or being made to feel bad because he is a subordinate, or a person of a lower rank. When a man is someone's bitch, this means that he is controlled by another person.
- I'm hungry! Be my bitch and make me some breakfast!
3. As a verb, to bitch means to complain or whine too much about something you think is unfair.
- Stop bitching about your situation and do something about it!
Ball (Bawl)
To ball means to cry a lot. We say that someone is balling their eyes out when they are sad and crying very loudly.
- The little girl's dog ran away and she balled her eyes out for weeks.
Bombshell
We call a beautiful, sexy woman a bombshell to describe her as powerful and explosively hot.
- I met this beautiful bombshell at a party and wanted to marry her instantly!
Beef
Beef refers to complaints or bad feelings. To have a problem with something is to have a beef with it.
- I've had a beef with that guy ever since he tried to steal my girlfriend.
Beer Goggles
Goggles are the tight glasses you wear when swimming. Though they keep water out of your eyes, goggles usually get foggy and decrease your ability to see. Like goggles, alcohol also decreases your ability to think and see clearly. So, after someone has had a few drinks, can't see clearly and becomes more likely to want to sleep with, or have sex with, someone they wouldn't normally be attracted to, they're said to be wearing their beer goggles.
- Someone may look ugly to you when you're sober, or not drinking, but they'll look fantastic with your beer goggles on!
Bollocks
Bollocks is British slang for testicles and is said when something is considered nonsense or an outright lie.
- You're 25 years old? Bollocks! You look more like 60!
Bug Out
To bug out means to get away, or escape, very quickly. In an emergency, you bug out and get as far away as possible.
- We had to bug out and run home when the lightning storm ruined our picnic.
Bite
Like taking a physical bite out of someone, to bite someone's words or style is to steal their idea or copy them. This slang is usually used by song writers and rappers when referring to someone using their lyrics. Someone who bites is a biter.
- Don't bite my lyrics! Write your own!
Cool
Cool is a tricky English word and means different things to different people. Cool can mean relaxed under pressure, confident, smart, and serves as a general term for someone who does their own thing without caring about what others think.
- My cousin is so cool! He plays the guitar and flies his own airplane.
Catchy
We use the word catchy to refer to music that stays in your head. Music with a memorable or captivating beat or melody grabs or catches you. Any bit of music, even short pieces used in commercials can be catchy.
- Every summer you'll hear catchy songs on the radio over and over again.
Clueless
To be clueless is to not understand, or have no idea what's happening, either generally or in a specific situation. Because clues are bits of information, if I give you a clue about something, I am sharing a piece of information about it. Police usually look for clues to help solve crimes.
The suffix "less" means none at all. If I am homeless, I have no home.
- I'm clueless about fixing things around my house, but I'm too cheap to hire a professional.
Cakewalk
A cakewalk is something that is incredibly easy. This word comes from the party game of the same name where absolutely no skill is required to win one or more cakes.
- My part-time job is a cakewalk. All I have to do is push a button once an hour.
Clique
A clique is a group of very close friends who usually don't socialize with non-members. Cliques usually form when large organizations like schools and companies have enough people to support smaller groupings of like-minded people. Some high school cliques you'll see in movies and TV shows include the jocks, or athletes, the pretty girls the jocks date, and the nerds, or good students who work study hard but wish they were jocks or pretty girls.
- There are too many cliques to count at my school.
Cockblock
To cockblock a guy is to stop him, either on purpose or unintentionally, from either hitting on or sleeping with a woman he is interested in. To block something is to get in its way. In this case, the thing being blocked is the equipment in a man's pants. A man may cockblock another man if he is interested in the same woman and a woman can cockblock a man if she doesn't want him talking with her friend.
- I was talking with that hot girl, but her friend cockblocked me before I could get her number.
Choice
In English slang, choice becomes an adjective that means high quality or excellent. A choice restaurant or a choice wine is considered well-chosen. Choice is only used when making an actual choice between alternatives. You can select a choice car, but you can't have a choice mom, no matter how cool she is, because you couldn't choose her.
- This is a choice club! How did you get on the guest list?
Commando
To go commando is to not wear underwear. This expression is said to have come from soldiers who remove their sweaty underwear after long marches to improve ventilation.
- It's a beautiful spring day and I just felt like going commando!
Chicken
A chicken is someone who is scared. This word is used to challenge, taunt or tease people when they do not want to do something they are uncomfortable with. For added emphasis, the person calling someone a chicken may imitate the sound of a chicken after a challenge.
- Are you going to ask that girl for her number, or are you chicken? (B... b... b-gawk!)
Chill (Chill Out)
As the literal meaning of the word chill is to make something cold, the slang meaning of the word is to relax and slow down. To chill is the opposite of doing something fast and exciting. You chill, or relax, at home and watch a movie on a Friday night.
- It was really nice just to relax and chill on the beach over my vacation.
Crap
Crap is the less strong version of shit and means something bad or undesirable like old junk we no longer want. We can also use it when we're upset or frustrated in polite company. Crap! I forgot to feed my cat today!
- Look at all this crap! Why did we buy all of useless junk?
Deadbeat
A deadbeat is a lazy person who usually relies on others for the things they need. A friend may spend the night on your couch, but if they live there, they're probably a deadbeat. A deadbeat is also someone who fails to do what they should be doing.
- That deadbeat father never sent any money to help support his children after his divorce.
Diss
Diss is short for disrespect. When you say something bad about someone, or insult them, you are dissing them. Diss can also be a noun.
- I got teased and dissed a lot while playing basketball yesterday because I'm a really awful player.
Damage
When something is hurt or broken, it is damaged. As slang, we use the term damage to describe the cost of something we don't really want to pay for. If a car repair costs $100, your wallet takes the "damage" of $100. You suffer "damage" when you have to pay for your child's braces, but not when you take a date out for dinner. When asking a friend how much something cost, you can ask, "What was the damage?"
- I just found out that my kid needs special shoes. The damage could be a few hundred dollars.
Deck
To deck someone is to punch them so hard that they are knocked to the floor. You can also be hit really hard by something, get knocked down, and still be considered "decked."
- The kangaroo got decked and hit the ground hard.
Down-low
To keep something on the down-low is to keep it secret. People can keep things on the down-low and companies can also keep new ideas on the down-low.
- I'm working on a new product for my company, but I'm keeping it on the down-low until everything is ready.
Dirt
Dirt is embarrassing or private information about someone which could hurt their reputation if revealed. Political candidates often "dig up dirt" on their opponents to injure their reputation before elections. To know a dark secret about someone is to have dirt on them.
- Those guys have dirt on me, so we'd better be nice to them.
Drag
A drag is something tiring, depressing or sad. Being trapped inside doing your taxes on a sunny day can be a real drag.
- It was a real drag missing the party last night because I had to work late.
Dud
A dud refers to a machine, or something like an explosive, that works improperly or not at all. A toaster that only burns toast is a dud. A person who doesn't live up to certain expectations can also be considered a dud.
- She heard all of these great things about that guy before their date, but he turned out to be a real dud.
Dull
Just like a dull, or unsharpened, knife, anything boring or uninteresting can be considered dull. Hopefully you don't find this English lesson dull!
- The lecture on island rocks I went to yesterday was really dull.
Dump
A dump is an uninviting or dirty place. To dump something means to pour or drop it without care. Garbage is often taken to garbage dumps. A dumpster is a big trash container, and a dumpster diver is someone who goes looking through trash to find valuable things people may have thrown away.
- Before my girlfriend comes over, I'd better clean up my dump of an apartment.
Doodle
A doodle is a quick drawing, usually made when you're not paying attention to what you're working on. Students will sometimes doodle in dull classes if teachers don't keep them entertained.
- I often doodle while I'm on the phone and have drawn some really cool designs.
Egghead
Egghead is slang for smart person. Anyone who knows a lot and studies a lot can be considered to be an egghead.
- I was a real egghead in college. I always stayed in the library and never went on any dates.
Eye Candy
Eye candy refers to something that is visually attractive and grabs lots of attention. Flashy lights and women in sexy dresses are called eye candy because, like real candy, you enjoy looking at them for the moment but probably shouldn't enjoy them for very long. Eye candy is often sexually arousing and is designed to have addictive appeal.
- The 80-year-old billionaire had a nice piece of 24-year-old eye candy on his arm at the party.
Earful/Eyeful
To get an earful or an eyeful of something means to hear a lot or see a lot of it for a long time. If your mom yells at you for crashing her car, you get an earful of her screaming. If your grandmother's swimsuit falls off on the beach while you're talking with her, you get an eyeful.
- I got an earful from my boss at work when I lost a big client.
Elbow Grease
Elbow grease is manual labor, or work you must physically do. When English speakers say that something just needs a bit of elbow grease, this means that some hard work is required to make it run smoothly.
- This old car looks bad, but with a little elbow grease, it'll be running like new!
Expat
Expat is short for expatriate, and refers to someone who is living in a foreign country. If you're studying English in America and you're from Brazil, then you're an expat!
- I'm an American expat living in Nepal!
Ex
Ex means previous or old. The woman I used to date is my ex-girlfriend, and someone who used to play baseball can be called an ex-baseball player. The term ex by itself usually refers to an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend.
- I had to go over to my ex's house yesterday to pick up my old clothes.
Easy Street
Easy street means being in luck or having things come really easy for you. If you live in paradise and never have to work, you're living on easy street.
- I was living on easy street after winning the lottery!
Eating
When English speakers say that something is eating them, this means that something is bothering or angering them. If someone looks angry or grumpy, we often ask, "What's eating you?"
- What's eating me?! I bought these cheap balloons that pop when I blow them up!
Empty Nester
When all of the children in a family finally leave a family home to start their own lives, we say that children have left the nest. Parents who remain in the home after their children have all moved out of the home are considered empty nesters. Remember that if you see the suffix --er on the end of a word, that usually means it's a person or a machine. A teacher is someone who teaches.
- After my younger sister went away to college, my parents became empty nesters.
Exec
Exec is short for executive. This informal title is often used by workers in a company when talking about people higher up in an organization, but anyone can use it to describe executives in any organization.
- I'm going golfing with a few execs from our partner company.
Eyeball
To eyeball something means to stare at it or examine it very closely. Usually, we eyeball people that make us mad or upset. You don't eyeball someone you love unless they eat the last piece of chocolate cake.
- Don't eyeball people unless you're looking for a fight!
Fuck
This is one of the most powerful words in English, so please use it carefully! Fuck has many, many uses, but we'll only cover a few of them here. Usually, fuck means to have sex (and not sweet, tender, romantic sex), or something negative. To have a serious problem is to be fucked. An unpleasant or disorganized situation is fucked up. To fail frequently is to be a fuck-up. To be deceived is to be fucked over. To play around and not do what you should be is to fuck around. To not care is to not give a fuck. In more polite company, you can say that something is FUBAR, or fucked up beyond all recognition. When people bother you too much, you can tell them to fuck off. Fuck also serves as a great filler word for positive and negative situations. "Hey, Bill! It's been too long! How the fuck are you?" "You just got fucking dirt on my new fucking couch, fucker."

Fossil
Real fossils are the remains of animals and plants that lived long ago. These are things like dinosaur and fish bones preserved in rock. As slang, fossil means someone or something that is incredibly old.
- Don't call your grandmother a fossil if you want some of her delicious pie!
Fancy
To fancy someone is to like them. You can also fancy doing something like going skiing or getting something like a new pair of shoes.
- Do you fancy going out for dessert?
Flip-flop
To flip-flop means to change your mind or take an opposite position suddenly. People who flip-flop frequently are very annoying to others. Political candidates often flip-flop on an issue depending on who their audience is. Flip-flops are also pairs of cheap sandals.
- Do you like living with my dog or not? Stop flip-flopping and tell me the truth!
Flake
A flake is someone who cannot be trusted with responsibility because they either forget or can't follow through. To call someone a flake, or say they are flakey, is to say they are unreliable. To miss an appointment or fail to do what you say you will is to flake-out.
- My friend is such a flake. Every time she says she'll meet me, she never does.
Flick
A flick is another word for movie. English speakers will often talk about going to a flick, or catching a flick.
- Come over to my place and we can watch a flick together.
Fluke
A fluke is something positive that happens more by accident than skill. Winning a soccer game because the goalie accidentally fell down is a fluke.
- Meeting my wife was a total fluke! I missed my train and met her at the station.
Flame
A flame is a tirade, or an overly aggressive and abusive verbal or written attack on someone. People are usually flamed online because the anonymity of the internet makes saying incredibly rude things really easy. Someone who flames is a flamer.

Freebie
A freebie is something, like an additional bonus, that you get for free. You'll often see freebies in stores as promotions. Sign up for a credit card and get a t-shirt as a freebie!
- My new car was a freebie, but I had to buy a house to get it!
Fruitcake
A fruitcake is an eccentric or crazy person who does their own thing. A real fruitcake is a kind of dessert usually sent to friends and family around the winter holidays. Unfortunately, because people don't really like fruit cakes, they're often sent as jokes.
- My sister is such a fruitcake. She takes her baby to the beach in his crib.
Five-0 (5-0)
Five 0 is slang for police officers. This slang originates from the 1970's American TV police drama Hawaii 5-0. Hawaii is the 50th American state.
- Fuck, it's the 5-0! Drop that TV and run!
Gobbledygook
Gobbledygook is spoken or written words or sounds with no meaning. When computer code becomes Gobbledygook, it's impossible to read and understand. Babies often speak gobbledygook as they learn to speak a language.
- When I restarted my computer, my whole essay turned into gobbledygook!
Green
Someone is considered green when they lack experience or begin doing something for the first time. New students, employees and teammates are all green.
- Because you're green, you won't have much responsibility at this company.
Gab
To gab means to talk or chatter about unimportant or ordinary things. Casual conversation is usually a form of gabbing. When you have important information to share, you talk, but you gab about a TV show when you're waiting for the bus.
- My sisters love to gab on the phone all day.
Geezer
I'm American, but Alec would say the word more like this: geezer. Geezer is British slang for man. Any man can be a geezer, but this slang is used particularly for old men.
- Someone should buy that geezer a new hat!
Goof off
A goof is a small mistake. Jumble your words when you speak and you make a goof. To goof off means to be silly or not do what you should be doing. If you have work to do but you decide to play some games instead, you're goofing off or goofing around.
- I should be packing for my trip, but it's more fun to goof off at the fair!
Ginormous
Just like the word "absotively," which is a combination of the words absolutely and positively, "ginormous" is a combination of the words gigantic and enormous, and means really, really big! An elephant is big, but a brachiosaur, one of the largest dinosaurs, is ginormous!
- Earth is big, but The Sun is ginormous!
Gnarly
Gnarly has many different uses, much like the word "cool." Gnarly, in the positive sense, means great, awesome or fantastic. To a surfer, a powerful, ginormous wave is gnarly. Negatively, gnarly can be used to mean weird or suspicious. "This green and brown soup looks a bit gnarly to me."
- I did a gnarly, 360 degree jump on my skateboard!
Good Call
A good call is a good idea or decision. "Good call" is also used frequently when judging sporting events. If a referee, judge or umpire makes a good decision regarding a play, he's considered to have made a good call. A "bad call" is the opposite of a good call and a "close call," or a "tough call," is a call that's difficult to make. "I don't know if I like this pasta. It's a tough call."
- Good call on this restaurant! This place is cheap AND delicious!
Gravy
Gravy is anything that's really easy. A job where you sit around watching YouTube videos of cats all day is gravy.
- My life is gravy because I can sleep all day and eat the tourists!
Greasy Spoon
A greasy spoon is a cheap and/or low quality restaurant like a diner or a cafe. This term is older American English, but it's still used in smaller towns and for local diners in cities.
- Food from a greasy spoon usually isn't good for you, but it sure can be tasty!
Grub
Grub is a very casual way of saying food. You can pick up some grub or eat some grub. Just remember that grub is an UNcountable noun! If you eat some grub, you're eating some casual food, but if you eat A grub you're eating a baby insect!
- Let's grab some grub at that local greasy spoon you like!
Hack
The usual meaning of hack is to cut or chop at something without care. You can also hack something when you can deal with it. Someone who can't hack it in the Army usually drops out. With the dawn of computers, the term is most widely used now to talk about circumventing, modifying or breaking something like a computer or other machine for your own purposes. I hacked my toaster and turned it into a time machine!
- Some computer hackers have the ability to break into networks and steal personal information.
Hottie
A hottie is usually an attractive young woman or man. You can describe someone as hot if you find them physically attractive.
- I hope I can get the phone number from that hottie over there.
Hater
A hater is someone who is usually jealous of the success of others. To say spiteful or mean things to someone, or about someone, who is successful is to hate, or hate on, someone. Don't be a hater!
- Some people started hating on my friend when she got a record deal.
Happy Camper
A happy camper is someone who's in a good mood. Someone relaxing around a warm fire at a campground is usually a happy camper.
- My son was NOT a happy camper when I missed his birthday party.
Hardcore
Hardcore means extremely difficult. Something requiring extreme physical effort is usually hardcore, but anything very difficult, like a school entrance exam, can be considered hardcore. Someone who is hardcore is considered to be very tough and strong.
- My uncle is hardcore. He eats whole lionfish raw!
High Roller
A high roller is someone who is very wealthy and can spend money without care. We often say that high rollers have money to burn.
- When a high roller walks into a casino, everyone comes over to watch him play.
Hard Case
A hard case is a bitter or tough person. A hard case has usually had a difficult life and may have even spent time in prison.
- That guy's a real hard case. He's been picked on his whole life and now he wants revenge.
Head
The head is another word for the toilet or bathroom. You will often hear hard cases and people from outside big cities in movies asking for the head when they need a toilet.
- Where's the paper? I'm going to the head.
Home Run
A home run is a baseball term that means to hit the baseball beyond the playing field. It is the best hit you can have in baseball. Used in any context, a home run becomes another way of describing a great achievement. If you hit a home run, you succeed!
- I hit a home run for my company when I signed a contract with a new client!
Hell of a... Helluva
"Hell of a" means great, very or extreme, and can be used in both good and bad situations. "We had a hell of a time climbing that mountain" means that we had a very difficult time climbing the mountain.
- Tell your friends! They're having a hell of a sale at our favorite store!
Heat
Heat refers to security or police and is usually used by criminals or people doing something bad in movies and TV shows. Heat can also mean firearm. To "pack heat" means to carry a gun.
- Hide the heat! The police are right over there!
Ice
Ice is the slang word for fancy jewelry like diamonds. You'll most often hear this word used in rap music. With a very different meaning, to "ice" someone means to kill them.
- My lady has expensive taste and loves to be covered in ice from head to toe.
Idiot Box
Idiot box is another word for television, because many people think TV makes people mindless, stupid and unproductive.
- Stare at the idiot box for too long and your mind will turn to mush!
ID
ID is short for identification. An ID can be anything from a driver's license to a passport or a library card.
- You'll have to show your member's card and ID if you want to rent a car here.
Itch
Itch in the usual sense means irritated, uncomfortable skin, usually in the form of a bite from an insect, that you can't stop touching. Similarly, the slang definition of itch means an intense desire to do something. If you have an itch to play soccer, you really want to play soccer. To act on your desire, or relieve your itch, is to scratch your itch.
- I'd better scratch my itch to open my own seaside restaurant soon, before I go crazy!
Item
An item is a couple in a relationship. When two people fall in love or start dating, they become an item. People that follow celebrity relationships often talk about two celebrities becoming "quite the item."
- My friend and his girlfriend fell in love last year and have been a serious item ever since.
Inhale
To inhale something is to eat it incredibly fast as if you were inhaling air. People that inhale their food often look like vacuum cleaners sucking food off of plates.
- Don't inhale your food! Eat slowly and chew properly.
In
What's popular, trendy and fashionable during a particular time period is considered "in style" or just "in." Trendy music, food, fashion, events and anything else in popular culture can be called "in." Popular people can also be considered "in," and the popular group of people at a school or organization is known as the "in crowd."
- I'll never be cool enough to keep up with what's "in" today.
In The bag
Something that's in the bag is easily or assuredly achievable. To remember this phrase, think of something that's in the bag as if it's something you're already holding. If you know that you will win a game, then victory's in the bag.
- We're winning by 30 points with only one minute to go! Victory's in the bag!
In The Know
Someone who's in the know is someone who has information that others don't. If you receive information before others, or know secret, confidential information, you're considered to be in the know.
- My friend gets all the great deals when buying rental properties because he's in the know.
In-Your-Face
Something that's in-your-face is something loud, aggressive, obnoxious and/or confrontational. People can be in-your-face if they are literally standing close to you and being aggressive. Advertising can also be in-your-face if it's loud, distracting and annoying.
- I wanted to sit and read a book but this other guy at the library was all in my face and annoying me with questions.

Something that's iffy is doubtful, suspect or questionable. Anything you're unsure of can be iffy. If the water you're about to drink looks green, even though you're told it's OK to drink, you'd be right to call the water "iffy."
- I'd like to go out and have a picnic today, but the weather looks a little iffy.
Jabber
To jabber is to talk for a long while, saying things that listeners don't really want to hear. If you're talking for a long time about your Pokémon collection and everyone else is reading something, there's a good chance you're jabbering.
- Stop jabbering already and get to the point!
Jip
To jip someone is to cheat them out of their fair share or intentionally take money that belongs to them. If everyone else gets two cupcakes and you only get one, you get jipped. Didn't get the correct change at the grocery store? If the cashier had a sneaky smile, you probably got jipped.
- That newspaper vending machine jipped me! I put in my money and it wouldn't give me a paper or my money back!
Jack
To jack something is to steal it. Cars, jewelry, shoes and anything else that can be taken quickly can be jacked. Large-scale theft that requires time and planning is usually a heist.
- Did you see who came in here? Someone just jacked all my new phones.
Jackass
Jackass is a general insult English speakers use to talk about anyone that is being loud, rude, dumb, unpleasant, argumentative, disrespectful and/or obnoxious. The TV show and movies of the same name are about people performing stunts, getting injured and doing other things only a jackass would be caught doing.
- Don't be a jackass! Stop turning on the TV and let me read in peace!
Jack Of All Trades
A jack of all trades is someone who is good at many things but not a specialist in one particular thing. Depending on how this phrase is used, it can have both good and bad meanings. You can call someone a jack of all trades in praise of their well-rounded set of talents, or use it to belittle them when special mastery is required.
- I'd rather be a jack of all trades than a master of one.
Jock
A jock is a sports athlete who usually plays multiple, and often rough, sports like football and hockey. Jock also has the slightly negative meaning of someone who is not very intelligent and only capable of playing sports and doing physical activities. Women who play lots of sports can also be called jocks or tomboys.
- My dad was a jock in college. He played football and baseball, and ran track.
Just Off The Boat
Someone who's just off the boat is someone who is new and inexperienced. This expression comes from the idea of a traveler stepping off a boat for the first time in a brand new country. Such a person looks around confused and awed by strange new things. Anyone new to a group or organization like a school can be just off the boat. "Fresh off the boat" is also commonly used.
- Look at that guy over there with the smile and the backpack. He must be just off the boat.
Jam
A jam is another word for trouble. The difference between trouble and jam is that a jam is usually not very serious and doesn't put you in physical danger. A car crash is trouble, but forgetting your lunch is more of a jam. Jams are usually fixed with a phone call or some easy help from someone else.
- I seem to be in a bit of a jam here. I left my airplane ticket at home, so could you print me a new one?
Junkie
A junkie is someone who is hooked on, or addicted to, something. People addicted to drugs are junkies, but so are people addicted to FarmVille. People who love to skydive and do other extreme sports often call themselves "adrenaline junkies" because they are addicted to the rush they feel when their bodies are excited.
- My uncle was a video game junkie but finally gave it up when his wife threatened to leave him.
Jerk Someone Around
To jerk someone around is to tease or play with them. If you call customer service and they keep transferring you to different people, then you're being jerked around. If a woman isn't really interested in dating a guy but keeps him around anyway, she's jerking him around.
- I didn't buy the boat because the dealer kept changing the price and jerking me around.
Joint
A joint is a casual place, like a fast food restaurant, where people can come and go easily. A local hamburger restaurant can be called a burger joint.
- Let's go to that chicken joint you like. They have really good hot sauce!
Kickass/Kick Ass
English speakers love ass! This word is used in so many ways and is combined with other words to make some great phrases. You've already learned badass and jackass in this series. We also taught you asshole, but forgot to teach you dumbass, which means stupid. Anyway, kickass means really fun, cool and/or exciting. It's an adjective used to describe things like parties. Kick ass, is a verb, and means to do really well at something. Both kickass and kick ass have positive meanings, but the thing to listen for is how the pronunciations of the slang word and phrasal verb are slightly different. This is a kickass party! This party kicks ass! Did you hear how the adjective was faster and how the verb had a rising intonation? Kickass. Kick ass!
- We really kicked ass with our kickass plays at the football game!
Knock
To knock something means to criticize, or make fun of, it. "Don't knock it till you try it," is a phrase English speakers often use to tell people not to say bad things about something before doing it themselves.
- Don't knock the kilt! The ladies love it.
Knockoff/ Knock Off
Listen carefully to the speed and intonation of my voice. A knockoff is a cheap fake or copy of something. You can buy a knockoff Rolex for only $10! Knock off is a phrasal verb with many uses. It can mean to stop working for the day, steal something, kill someone, stop doing something or reduce the price of something.
- The store knocked off the price of these knockoff jeans, so I got them for only $1!
Knock Back
We use knock back to describe drinking alcohol quickly. You can knock back a few beers, but you wouldn't say that you knocked back a glass of milk.
- I went to my favorite bar after work and knocked back a few shots.
Knockout/Knock Out
A knockout is a really beautiful woman. The phrasal verb knock out, sometimes expressed as K.O., can mean to hit someone so hard that go unconscious, or to finish doing something very quickly.
- I need to knock out my work so I'll be on time for my date at the park with this knockout I met.
Knock Up
To knock a woman up is to get her pregnant without intending to. Many couples end up getting married when the woman gets knocked up.
- Have fun on the camping trip, Bill! Just don't knock anyone up!
Kickback/Kick Back
A kickback is a payment, often made by secret, illegal agreement, where someone gets a percentage of money back in return for organizing a transaction. As an example, a government official can get a kickback from a company by recommending that company get a government contract. The company gets the job and the government official that organized the deal gets a piece of the money secretly from the company. The phrasal verb kick back just means to relax and forget about your worries and responsibilities.
- Because of all the great kickbacks I receive, I can kick back and relax on the beach all day.
Killer
Something killer is amazing, outstanding or game-changing. A killer dress is a very sexy dress and a killer smartphone app is really helpful or very fun and addictive. A Facebook killer, with "killer" being used as a verb, means the next big software or service that will unseat Facebook as the NEW popular social networking website.
- We need a killer stunt to really WOW people at our next animal show!
Kicks
Kicks are shoes. This slang is often used to describe sneakers and other shoes used for running and sports. We don't use this for dress shoes and we don't use the word "kick" to describe one shoe. You won't really hear this slang used in the regular conversations of people over the age of 25, but you'll hear it regularly from young people and movies.
- I just picked up a shiny new pair of kicks and I'm ready to hit the basketball court!
Klutz
A klutz is a clumsy person who is physically uncoordinated and often makes physical mistakes like dropping dishes.
- I'm such a klutz! I opened a drink for a girl and got it all over her shirt!
Knucklehead
A knucklehead is a stubborn person. Knuckleheads don't change their minds easily, learn lessons slowly and can be unresponsive even when yelled at.
- Tell that knucklehead kid of yours to stop cutting branches off my trees!
Kook
A kook is an odd, crazy or eccentric person. You can also describe someone who does weird, things like washing their car with their tongue, as kooky.
- That lady is a bit of a kook. She has tea parties with her 30 cats every Sunday.
Laid-Back
A laid-back person is physically relaxed or mentally calm. Just imagine a person laying back in a chair and taking a nap. Laid-back people don't get too excited about things and are generally happy anywhere.
- My dad's really laid-back. He lets me stay up late and play video games on school nights.
Lame
When something's lame, it's boring or uncool. If you're a teenager, going to a party with your mom and dad would probably be pretty lame.
- This movie's lame. Put something else on.
Legit
Legit is the shortened form of legitimate. Something legit is official, legal and generally OK. This slang is often used to talk about anything that could be fake, like an ID used by a minor when trying to get into a bar, or a purse sold off the back of a truck.
- Are you sure this watch is legit? It says Calvin Klean.
Loco
Loco is a borrowed word from Spanish, and it can mean crazy in both positive and dangerous ways as English slang. You can call someone loco or call a situation loco.
- Don't mess with that dog over there. It's loco and will try to bite you.
Lingo
Lingo is just short for language and we often use it casually when talking about anything from particular dialects to computer code.
- Can you stop with all the scientific lingo and just use plain English?
Lip
To give someone lip means to talk back to them. Children often give their parents lip, but anyone can give lip to an authority figure when they say something they shouldn't.
- I don't care what mom said! Do your homework and don't give me any lip.
Loaded
To "load" something basically means to fill it up, the way you load a truck with boxes. There are two main slang meanings of loaded, though. The first means to have a lot of money. A millionaire would be loaded. You can also say that someone's loaded when they've had too much to drink.
- That millionaire over there is really drunk! He's doubly loaded!
Looker
A looker is an attractive man or woman. It's someone you really want to look at. This slang is often used to describe clean and polished sports cars.
- That car's a real looker! I bet she drives like a dream.
Loudmouth
A loudmouth is a person who speaks with a loud voice generally and is often obnoxious. These people usually think they know everything and are happy to tell the world about it.
- Why don't you shut up already? You're such a loudmouth!
Ladies' Man
A ladies man is good with the ladies. He's loved by women and usually enjoys spending time around women. Used in a joking way, you could call a man that's not good with women and can never get a date a ladies' man in a sarcastic way.
- My friend's a real ladies' man and he's always got a date.
Make Out
To make out means to kiss someone passionately. And it usually involves touching of other kinds which I won't cover in this lesson. To see examples, just visit any high school.
- I was making out with my girlfriend in the theater and we missed half the movie!
Make Waves
To make waves is to cause trouble or do something that's not normally done. It comes from the idea of waves in water. When a boat passes by, it makes waves and disturbs the peace of the water. It's not necessarily bad to make waves, but people who don't like change will usually complain about others making waves.
- The new CEO is really making some waves in the company. A lot of senior people got fired.
Mash-Up
A mash-up is a combination of two or more things, like songs, that become something new and interesting. The Grey Album from DJ Danger Mouse is a mash-up of Jay-Z's Black Album and the White Album from the Beatles.
- I like mash-ups, but this mix of country music and death metal is AWFUL!
Max Out
"Max" is short for "maximum." If you reach the maximum limit of something, you've maxed it out. This can happen to credit cards, time, energy and machines.
- I maxed out my credit cards, so I think the responsible thing to do is get new ones!
Meds
Many slang words are abbreviations of words in common usage. "Meds" is the shortened form of "medication" or "medicine." "Meds" most often refers to medication that you take regularly for things like high blood pressure and depression. To be "off your meds" means that you're acting weird because you're not taking your medication.
- My cousin was put back on his meds because he tried to eat a live chicken.
Meathead
"Meathead" is often used to describe athletes who only think when it comes to sports. In other words, a meathead has big muscles but small brain capacity.
- That meathead can't count to ten, but he sure can carry a football.
Meat Market
"Meat market" is slang for a bar or club where men and women go to find others to hook up with physically. Think of it as the opposite of a church picnic.
- I need to forget about my ex-girlfriend. Let's hit up that meat market!
Meltdown
A meltdown is a massive problem or disaster. Just like an actual nuclear meltdown, a meltdown causes great stress for people. Meltdowns usually feature intense anger and yelling, especially if someone did something stupid.
- I came home five hours late and my mom had a meltdown.
Mess Up
To mess something up means to make a mistake or cause a problem that's not too serious. If you forget to do something like mail a letter when you were supposed to, you messed up.
- I messed up on a few exam questions, but at least I spelled my name right!
Mojo
Your mojo is your special sauce. It's your spirit, lively personality and passion. Charismatic people have lots of mojo.
- In order to win this new client, we're gonna need some of your magic mojo!
Moolah
There are TONS of slang words for money in English. Moolah is one with a particularly cool sense to it. You pay for things at a store with a credit card or CASH, but "moolah" would be a word used to describe money won at a casino or stolen from a bank.
- Look at all of this MOOLAH! I'm gonna buy a new car!
Newbie/Noob/Newb
A newbie is someone new to something. A newbie lacks experience and often makes many mistakes. This slang is most often used to describe people who are new to games and aren't very good at them.
- You're such a noob. Don't you know the difference between a v6 engine and a v8?
New York Minute
A New York minute is an incredibly fast period of time, like a split second. New York City is a very busy and fast-paced place, so people are often in a rush, or want to do things quickly.
- I ate my lunch in a New York minute because I had to start working again right away.
Narc
While the word "Narc" is the shortened form of "narcotics officer," a member of a special police division that enforces drug laws, anyone who tells authority figures (like police officers, bosses and parents) that another person did something wrong or illegal can be called a narc. This word is also a verb. You "narc out" someone if you report them to the police or other authority figures.
- If you narc out your friends, no one will trust you.
Nuke
This word is short for "nuclear bomb" or "nuclear weapon." It's also a verb, as you can nuke something to cause a great explosion, or destroy something completely. You can also use this word as a verb to describe cooking with a microwave oven. Nuke your frozen dinner for five minutes and you've got a meal!
- Nothing was left alive after the nuke hit.
Nail
To nail something means to do it perfectly. An athlete accomplishing a perfect move or action, like a gymnast landing perfectly, is said to "nail" the action. "Nail" is also another word for having sex. "I just nailed the hottest girl yesterday!"
- The swimmer nailed the dive and got a perfect 10/10.
Needle
To "needle" someone is to annoy or embarrass them repeatedly with jokes or insults, like poking them repeatedly with a needle. If your friend is wearing some funny clothes and you keep making fun of them, you're needling them.
- My friends thought the clothes and hat I was wearing were funny, so they needled me for an hour.
Nerd
"Nerd" is the term for an intelligent yet socially awkward person. Nerds often spend their time researching or studying things considered boring or highly technical, like varieties of beetles, and can become obsessive about their passions. Though the idea most people have of a nerd is an unattractive person studying in a library for 28 hours a day, anyone who is obsessive about something can be called a nerd. Some people are sports nerds and know all of the statistics for their favorite teams.
- My last girlfriend was a shy nerd who collected rocks, but I thought she was really cute.
Ninja
Referencing the shadowy, skilled assassins of traditional Japan, a ninja of today is anyone who is a highly skilled expert. Someone who knows how to fix any computer in a very short amount of time could be called a "tech support ninja."
- My friend in college was called the "cookie ninja" because he always took cookies from the cafeteria without being seen.
Nosey
To be "nosey" means to put your nose into other people's business. When you're nosey, you ask lots of questions about what others are doing, and you want to know what's going on, even if it has nothing to do with you.
- Mind your own business and stop being so nosey.
Numero Uno
This Spanish term, commonly found in English conversations, means "number one." It refers to the best or top person in a group or organization, like the boss or president.
- I was numero uno in sales of copy machines at my company last month.
Nutjob/Nutcase
A nutjob, or nutcase, is a crazy or eccentric person who does things that look foolish or ridiculous to others.
- If you jump out of your window because you think you can fly, you're a nutjob! Only a nutjob would try to kiss a crocodile.

Tiếng lóng đồng nghĩa với đang sắp chết / ngủm; hoặc bi thất bại, rớt đài, sạt nghiệp, sụp tiệm, bị loại ra khỏi cuộc chơi ...

Các cách nói trẹo hay nói tránh đi là một hiện tượng văn hóa trong mọi ngôn ngữ. Cụm từ lóng sau đây sẽ nói thay cho từ ngữ cấm kị là "chết" của con người. Người Việt hay Tây Phương họ cũng dùng các cách nói trẹo đi như:
- Her eyes fluttered open for a moment and then she breathed her last.
(Đôi mắt của bà dập đờn mở ra trong vài giây và sau đó bà trút hơi thở cuối cùng)
- She breathed her last at about two o'clock that afternoon.
(Bà mất / ra đi / qua đời / thở hơi thở cuối cùng ... vào khoảng 2 giờ chiều hôm đó.)
- Cradled in his wife's arms, he breathed his last.
(Nằm gọn trong vòng tay của vợ mình, ông trút hơi thở cuối cùng của ông.)
buy the farm
(Ngụ ý chết vì tai nạn, chết banh xác, chết mất xác, chết đi, qua đời, tạ thế ... hoặc muốn chết thì hãy mua nông trại hay đất để chôn xác như câu chuyện sau đây.)
Câu chuyện xảy ra trong một cuốn truyện tên "Of Mice and Men", có hai nhân vật tên là George and Lennie, họ là hai người làm thuê cho các nơi khác, họ luôn luôn nói về chuyện mua một nông trại để về đó ở mà không phải trả lời ai một câu hỏi nào cả. Sau đó, họ hỏi nhau làm sao sẽ mua đất. George phải bắn Lennie chết một cách không đau đớn - Đây là cách làm sao để chết đi có nghĩa là mua đất (thứ mà không ai muốn mua) để chôn mình và từ đó có cụm từ "buy the farm"
Cụm từ lóng này phát xuất từ trong quân đội Mỹ.
(a) Như một chiếc máy bay chiến đấu bị cắm đầu xuống một nông trại ...không những trả giá bằng cái chết của anh phi công mà còn chôn luôn xác ở đó hoặc phải bồi thường thêm cho thiệt hại.
(b) Các anh lính còn sống sót hỏi nhau khi nào mua nông trại (Lính đi đánh giặc ai biết khi nào chết / khi nào chết thì chôn ở đâu / khi nào về vườn để nằm yên khỏi mất xác ... )
Ví dụ:
- I'm afraid I have some upsetting news. Your husband was crossing the M4 and, well I'm afraid he bought the farm. (Tôi e rằng tôi có tin sẽ làm cho bà đau lòng. Chồng bà đã đi ngang qua chiếc xe tăng M4 và, vâng anh ta đã chết !)
- Hey Vinnie, you just bought the farm. The boss wishes to speak urgently with you!
(Ê Vinnie, chết toi mày rồi, xếp muốn nói chuyện với mày ngay đó!!!)
- My laptop just bought the farm.
(Máy vi tính của tao vào nghỉa địa rồi.)
To meet your maker
(Theo ông theo bà, qui tiên, chầu trời, lên thiên đàng, về nơi chín suối, xuống âm phủ ... )Vị dụ:
- I am tired of your bragging, prepare to meet your maker!
(Tao mệt với cái nói phách của mày lắm rồi, mày chuẩn bị đi gặp gia tiên của mày đi!)
- I'm afraid your dog is no more. He's gone to meet his maker.
(Tao e rằng con chó của mày không còn đâu. Nó bị làm cầy 7 món rồi - cách nói khôi hài thường gặp khi chọc ghẹo ...)
- God made you and you are made to meet him someday!
(Chúa tạo ra bạn và bạn được sinh ra để gặp ngài một ngày nào đó! (ngủm rồi còn đâu mà gặp)
kick the bucket
Đây là một thành ngữ cũng là từ lóng nói trẹo đi là chết - có nhiều giả thuyết cho cách nói lóng này là theo hình ảnh tự treo cổ vào thòng lọng và đá vào cái thùng đựng nước dưới chân. Cũng có giả thuyết cho rằng khi chết thì có một thùng nước thánh mang về từ nhà thờ được đặt ngay dưới chân xác người và người thân sẽ rải nước thánh vào chân người chết. Các giả thuyết khác như lúc chết chân người ta dài ra và có thể đá vào cái thùng để gần đó hay khi giết heo người ta treo nó trên một cây sườn ngang hay là cây đà (bucket theo tiếng địa phương) và con heo khi chết nó có thế đá chân vào cây đà này ... và còn vài giả thuyết như chơi đá lon "Kick the can" của trẻ con, đứa nào đá cái lon mà bị đứa giữ lon bắt gặp được thì coi như chết !Ví dụ:
- Didn't you hear? He kicked the bucket - had a heart attack, I think.
(Bà có nghe không? Ổng chết rồi - tui nghĩ là ổng bị nhồi máu cơ tim.)
- When I kick the bucket, you can just bury me under a tree at the bottom of the garden.
(Khi bố chết, con có thể chỉ chôn bố dưới gốc cây ở cuối vườn.)
Give a damn
(Quan tâm, chăm lo, hành động chăm sóc về một việc gì, hay về một ai đó)Đây là tiếng lóng rất phổ biến - Thông thường chỉ cần nghe ai đó nói DAMN là bạn đã đủ hiểu họ nói gì ngay - Nó có nghĩa rất rộng và có thể kèm theo bất kỳ một câu nói nào.
1. là tiếng kêu kinh hoàng, hoảng hốt, khiếp đảm, khủng khiếp, thất kinh ...
- You lost your keys? Damn.
(Mày đánh rơi chìa khóa của mày à? Chết mẹ rồi)
2. Diễn đạt mối sợ hải, kinh hải, sợ ai đó, kinh khủng ...
- DAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNNN she's hot!
(Trời ơi nàng nóng/hấp dẫn kinh khủng quá!)
3. Quan tâm đến một ai đó hay việc gì đó...
- I don't give a damn what you think!
(Mày nghĩ sao thì nghĩ kệ mày tao đếch cần)
4. Tiếng nguyền rủa hay trù ẻo
- You will be damned for doing that.
(mày sẽ bị trời tru đất diệt cho việc làm đó.)
5. Tiếng chửi thề với ngữ điệu tục tiểu thay cho giơ ngón tay giữa đồng nghĩa với "xuống địa ngục đi" - Ngữ điệu của dân hè phố ở Việt Nam hay dùng tiếng ĐM cũng đồng nghĩa tiếng DAMN này.
- You're so rude! Damn you!
(... mẹ mày! Mày mất dạy quá!
6. Tiếng kêu ngạc nhiên
Ví dụ có ai đó đứng sau lưng và hù bạn ... BOO!
bạn giựt mình kêu lên ... DAMN!
7. Cách nói kèm theo từ "well" thường sử dụng với chữ "better"
- You better damn well lock that door!
(tốt nhất là mày đóng thật chặt cái cửa lại!)
8. Damn là một tính từ kèm theo các từ như "near", "close" để tăng thêm mức độ nghiêm trọng.
- I was damn close to hitting that car!
(Một tí ti nữa thôi là tao đụng chiếc xe đó rồi!)
9. Damn là một tán thán từ dùng thay cho chữ "wow"
- Damn, that certainly is a colorful shirt.
